10 Ways to Detox Your Body

Purify your body.

Sugar, alcohol, fast food, caffeine: we put a lot of things into our bodies that aren’t necessarily the best for us. A bit of indulgence is part of life, but every now and then it’s nice to give your body a break from toxins and flush out your system. Detoxification is the process of removing impurities from the body to help it function better, and in turn, feel better.

There are several signs that it may be time to detox. If you’re feeling sluggish, foggy headed, or tired much of the time, if you’re seeing flare-ups in skin problems, or if you’re experiencing unusual headaches or stomach problems, it may be a sign that your body needs a restart.

Follow our detox tips to flush your system from the inside out. When used in tandem, these 10 ways to detox will help you rid your body of the substances that are slowing it down and weakening performance. You’ll remove toxins from your liver, kidneys, lungs and skin, leading to better circulation, higher mental alertness and more energy. Many also experience relief from allergies and an improved complexion as the result of a detox.

1. Eliminate toxins

The first step of any cleanse is to eliminate the toxins that cause trouble. Avoid cigarettes, alcohol, coffee, saturated fats and refined sugars, all of which put a strain on your system.

2. Step up your water intake

Staying hydrated is essential to any successful detox, so take your water intake to an entirely new level. Drink a full glass of water with each meal, as well as throughout the day. Drinking lots of water helps clear up your skin and contributes to properly functioning digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems.

3. Eat right

We won’t advocate for drinking water with cayenne pepper for seven days straight, but we will insist on eating a clean diet filled with whole foods during your detoxification process. Focus on hearty greens, lean meats and lots of fiber, and avoid all processed foods. If you’re unsure of where to start, try our 7 Day Clean Eating Detox Menu for a week-long guide.

4. De-stress

When you’re stressed out, your body releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. As these hormones build up over time, they act as toxins in the body and contribute to an overall “blah” feeling.

Help rid your body of these stressors by changing the way you respond to stress. When you feel your blood pressure rising, take three big, deep breaths. Remember that you have no control over other people’s actions, only how you respond to them. Choose to respond calmly.

5. Avoid environmental toxins

Steer clear of secondhand smoke, smog and harsh chemicals like commercial cleaning products. Distilled white vinegar and baking soda make wonderful, all-natural household cleaners to use while you detox.

6. Get a massage

A gentle massage is not only relaxing, it’s a manual way of releasing the toxins that have built up deep within your muscle tissue. It’s also great for improving your circulation. You can enlist a masseuse or give yourself a massage with your hands, a tennis ball or a foam roller. Be sure to drink even more water before and after your massage to flush out the toxins that have been newly released into the blood stream.

7. Practice yoga

When it comes to detoxifying your body, yoga is one of the best forms of exercise around. Yoga focuses on the connection between the mind and body, helping you to detach from the stressors of day-to-day life and focus on your breath and movement. Practicing yoga is a stimulating and cleansing exercise for your muscles and your mind. Plus, if you break a sweat, you’ll be eliminating toxins through your skin, too. 8. Hit the sauna

Another way to help your body sweat out impurities is to hit the sauna. Sit in the sauna until you’re nice and sweaty, but not so long that you feel uncomfortable. Anywhere from five to 20 minutes will do the trick. Again, drink plenty of water to replace all the fluids you’re sweating out.

9. Try acupuncture

If you’ve never tried acupuncture before, now is the perfect time. Acupuncture uses tiny needles to release pressure points in the body that may be blocked with toxins. According to holistic medicine, these blockages can contribute to all sorts of health problems, from headaches to arthritis. Acupuncture enthusiasts swear by it, and some report seeing results almost immediately.

10. Get more sleep

Lack of sleep wears your body down and leads to increased stress, poor mental performance and weight gain. Aim for a minimum of eight hours every night during your detox. Your body needs time to re-charge and absorb all the clean nutrients you’ve been giving it.
