The beauty world is full of myths and misconceptions. One of the most infamous of all is how to remove makeup stains. There’s nothing worse than looking in the mirror before leaving the house and noticing a smear of red lipstick on your collar or foundation on your favorite blouse. You’ve tried scrubbing, washing, and every stain removal product imaginable, but nothing works.
Instead of giving up and tossing your clothes in the laundry, remember these four tips to get rid of makeup stains before it’s too late!
1. Shaving Cream Save
Foamy shaving cream doesn’t just ensure a smooth shave and silky skin; it also does a great job at busting stains! Its fluffy, soapy nature helps break down and lift stubborn makeup stains. And little goes a long way! Dab a bit of shaving cream on the collar of your shirt before tossing it in the laundry to quickly remove foundation stains.
2. Hairspray Help
The case of the butterfingers can certainly lead to lipstick application slip-ups; and before you know it, your carpet is wearing your favorite lip color! Instead of frantically searching for spot-remover, bust out your hairspray! A little hairspray on a cream-based product, such as a lipstick, lifts the stain before it sets in the fabric. Simply spritz where necessary and let it sit for a few minutes, then blot the stain away with a cloth.
3. Toothbrush Trick
Instead of rubbing the stain with your finger and pushing more dirt and oil into the fabric, use a toothbrush. That’s right-the tool can do more than just clean your teeth! Slowly rub the area with gentle circles to break the stain down. If the makeup is powder-based, brush off as much as you can beforehand. It also helps to combine a few drops of laundry detergent with water, dip your toothbrush in the mixture, and brush away the stain with small, vigorous strokes.
4. Vodka Voodoo
This tried and true approach removes even the darkest of stains from the lightest of garments. Apply vodka to the stain before washing. This preps the clothes for easy stain removal. As a plus, spraying your clothes with vodka will help freshen them up a bit, seeing as vodka kills odor-causing bacteria.
