Grain-Free Dog Biscuits

No ratings yet

Healthy dog biscuits made with this grain-free secret ingredient.

Dogs often suffer from allergies that prevent them from eating grains, for example, wheat flour or oats. Using black beans is an excellent substitute for most any grain. Lentils are also a good choice. Like with any treat we recommend portion control. Although this healthy dog biscuit recipe is made without added sweeteners they should be given in moderation. If your dog suffers from itchy skin or grain related allergies, this treat is a yummy option to commercially made dog biscuits.

NOTE: Check with your veterinarian before making any changes to your pet’s diet. Also, please be aware of any allergies your pet may have to specific ingredients and avoid ingredients which have caused reactions in your pets in the past. If you are unsure about a specific ingredient found in one of our recipes, introduce the food to your pets in small amounts first.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup black beans cooked, rinsed and drained
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter natural
  • 1/2 banana very ripe, mashed
  • 1 egg whipped (see tip below for dogs with allergies to chicken products)

Instructions

  • Add cooked black beans to a food processor, blender, or use a fork and mash well. Combine mashed beans with peanut butter, banana, and whipped egg. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  • Cover and refrigerate until chilled and slightly thickened, approximately 1 hour. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Drop by rounded teaspoon onto a parchment-lined or nonstick cookie pan (Makes approximately 30 to 34 small biscuits.) Place in preheated oven.
  • After 15 minutes, remove pan from oven and use the back of a spoon or a fork to flatten. Bake another 10 minutes then flip biscuits over. Continue baking 15 to 20 minutes. Total baking time is 40 to 45 minutes. Allow to cool completely before serving or storing in an airtight container.
  • Tip: For dogs with allergies to chicken products, substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce for one egg.
  • Make Ahead: Because there is no flour used in this recipe the biscuits are more like soft baked cookies. This biscuit recipe is great for freezing. Just bake as instructed, allow to cool completely then store in a freezer ziplock bag. Be sure to label the bag with the date and contents. Remove a few biscuits at a time and thaw at room temperature before serving.

  1. thank you so much .My little girl is allergic to grain and all poultry products. She will really like these

  2. Hi! I love the dog treat recipes you’ve shared. I do however have a couple questions. I want to make some and give as gifts, some have to be mailed. Is there a safe, natural way to preserve them? I also want to make up a bunch for my babies but don’t want to have to store in the fridge. It seems to me if they are cooked thoroughly and are completely dry the shelf life would be quite a while. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    1. Candace, The doggie treats do make great gifts. They should do fine for mailing. One suggestion would be to freeze them
and take one out at a time, let thaw, and then give to your dogs. Otherwise, they should stay fresh for serveral days.

  3. Thank you for posting this recipe!!I always make my dogs treats, and never thought of black beans!! Now, for myself & my husband, I use black beans for many recipes, including black bean brownies which are amazing. But I never end thought about using them for dog treats! I will be making these this weekend ..thank you again!!

  4. Would dehydrating work for these treats to extend their shelf life or would they just crumble apart and not maintain their form?

    1. Lynda, Hmmmmm…to be honest, I’m not sure. However, I recommend adding them to a freezer safe ziplock bag and freeze. I take one out at a time, allow to thaw, then give to our dog. YUM!

  5. I just made these for my guys. Not sure what I did wrong but, after chilling, the dough wasn’t “doughy” so I added a bunch of nutritional yeast until I could somewhat form them into plopped messes on the parchment. They ended up working out though, the dogs like them!

  6. Hello~! Just to be clear, the whipped egg is the whole egg and not just the white? Thank you and loving your site!!
