Slow Cooker - Hot Chocolate Steel-Cut Oatmeal
Ingredients
- 1 cup steel cut oats
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon coconut palm sugar or pure maple syrup
- 8 liquid stevia drops (or an extra tablespoon of sugar)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the water, milk, vanilla, and stevia. Whisk in the cocoa, sugar, and salt.
- Finally, stir in the oats. Oil the inside of your slow cooker (this prevents the oatmeal from sticking). Pour in the above mixture.
- Set your slow cooker to LOW for 1-2 hours, and turn it to KEEP WARM before finally retiring to bed. In the morning, give it all a stir and feast! Top with some shaved chocolate if you’re feeling really decadent!

Looks yum, my kids would love it but how much does it make?
thx
Hi Lauren. It makes 4 servings. Enjoy!
thanks for that, I just found all the comments below, that'll teach me for checking out recipes late at night lol
What size crock pot would you recommend?…4 quart?
Carie, Yes, 4 to 6 qt.
This looks delicious, I can't wait to try it! I love that this is a delicious way to feed your family something really healthy.
Breakfast is much easier to eat when it's already made in the morning! Love it!
Can you use regular milk instead? Or maybe dry milk?
I would love to know the nutritional values on this
Shannon, This recipe was submitted by a guest blogger. We’re making our way through these recipes and will be adding data as soon as possible.
I don't have coconut milk…would just regular skim work as well?
Melanie, Low-fat milk will work fine. 🙂
Any suggestions on how you'd cook it if your crock pot doesn't have a "keep warm" setting?
Killie, In that case I’d probably use the stovetop.
Any suggestions on how you'd cook it if your crock pot doesn't have a "keep warm" setting?
I made this last night and put it in a seperate glass bowl, which I sat inside my slow cooker. I filled the crock of the slow cooker with water until it was half way up the side of the glass bowl with the oatmeal in it. I cooked it on low overnight and the results were perfect.
Can I use rolled oats?
Crockpot liners!!
Can't wait to try this! Can I use traditional oats?
Leeanne, This recipe has to have steel cut.
Last time I was craving chocolate…..I found this recipe and tried it……was soooo good!!!! It really does taste like hot chocolate and is a great breakfast!!!!
Great! So happy you enjoyed. 🙂
How long would you cook it on the stovetop?
I only have quick oats so I will make this in morning before kids get up:)
Made this yesterday evening for this morning and it was delicious! Thanks for the recipe!
Mine were so watery, not like the picture at all.
Can this be frozen, in small portions, for breakfast through the week?
Sheri, I'm not sure since I've never frozen this recipe. I'm too sure oatmeal would taste too great after being frozen. 🙁
The recipe sounds great but I had calculated the points based on the nutritional values listed here and it came to 6 points..
Val, That’s correct, it has 6 SmartPoints.
How are you calculating the nutritional value? 1/4 c of dry Steele cut oats has approximately 150 calories, cooking the oats doesn’t change the calories. The recipe calls for 1 c of oats and serves 4, so I am essentially eating 1/4 c. What am I missing?
Hi Renee,
The data is correct. 1/4 cup of dry oats is only 74 calories. 1 cup of dry oats, plus any extra ingredients, comes to about 4 (1-cup) servings when cooked.
