One of the reasons belly fat is so difficult to remove is that it is classified as “active fat.” Unlike some fatty tissue that merely sits “dormant,” fat in your belly releases hormones that can affect your health — and your ability to shed weight, particularly around the waist and abdomen. As a result, eliminating belly fat can be difficult, especially if you’re in your forties or older. As your hormone levels shift during middle age, fat around your midsection tends to grow faster than fat in other places.

Losing belly fat requires a combination of diet and exercise. We’re not suggesting you should just hit the gym and consume salads daily, but rather getting creative, and finding ways to incorporate consistent, and small changes to lose belly fat. A healthy, balanced diet that is low in processed foods and added sugars can help reduce belly fat. Additionally, regular exercise, including cardio and strength training, can help burn calories and fat and tone abdominal muscles.

2. Get enough sleep.

Studies have shown that people who get the recommended amount of sleep are less likely to be overweight. Getting to bed early stops you from reaching for a late-night snack, and can provide you with enough energy for a morning workout.

4. Avoid soda.

You probably know that sugar is a major culprit when it comes to weight gain. If you’re not sure how to start detoxing from sugar, start by cutting soda and other sugary drinks from your diet. Replace soda with water, seltzer, or tea to hydrate and cut down on empty calories.

5. Plan ahead.

Cooking your own meals is the best way to avoid extra sugar, salt, fat, and calories. When you prepare food in your own home, you know exactly what you’re eating. Sit down and plan a week’s worth of meals and snacks before you go grocery shopping. Prepare as much as possible over the weekend, so that when hunger strikes, you have healthy foods ready to eat.

  1. I’ve lost 5 kilos in my first week. It’s my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off.

  2. Since I do all of the cooking, I have changed the menu quite a bit. More skinless chicken, definitely more steamed veggies, love serve salmon with lemon with steamed rice. Its made a difference in my calorie intake and so far hasn’t been refused my kids or husband.
