If you’ve read the label on commercially made ketchup you know the recipe is filled with refined sugar and other frightening ingredients. Our homemade healthy ketchup provides all the tangy ketchup taste without any of the bad ingredients. You can even use no-calorie natural sugar substitutes to cut the calories even more. This delicious ketchup is one of the best we’ve ever tasted and you will love it on burgers, fries, sandwiches, and anything else that tastes great with your favorite tomato condiment.

In many cases, fruits and vegetables in their raw form is the healthiest way to consume the food. When it comes to tomatoes, you actually enjoy more health benefits when they are cooked. Tomatoes are packed with lycopene, which many believe reduces a person’s risk for cancer. When tomatoes are cooked the lycopene is activated even more, so you enjoy greater benefits when you eat marinara sauce or ketchup. This gives you an opportunity to squeeze something healthy into your daily eating plan without going overboard with raw produce.

Homemade Healthy Ketchup

A favorite condiment in almost every household, this ketchup takes it up a notch by providing a freshness you can't buy at the store.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces tomato paste can or jar - recipe for Homemade "Canned" Tomato Paste
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • kosher or sea salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons mild molasses honey is optional, more or less to taste
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, add all ingredients, and stir until combined; refrigerate in a glass jar with lid. Ketchup will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

    1. Yes! I've always been an avid Heinz Ketchup user, and when I found Simply Heinz and tried it, I was pleasantly surprised. It's fantastick.

  1. I have made ketchup before(not your recipe) but it didn't taste very good. I am excited to try this.

    1. My friend makes her own, and it freezes well. I don't like it bc of the v inegar. It gags me. Hers is not the same recipe, but it calls for 1/4c vinegar.

      1. Kella, You can certainly cut down the vinegar or use a bit of fresh squeezed lemon juice in it's place (use half of the amount called for). A milder, sweeter vinegar would be a white balsamic.

  2. I altered this just a bit b/c of my son's food allergies. I used 1 tbs. dark unsulfered molasses instead of 2, did 1 tbs. of dried chives instead of the garlic and onions, and did about 1/8 c. white vinegar. It was delicious! This recipe is a winner! Best ketchup recipe I've found. Thanks for a great recipe!

  3. I've been meaning to make ketchup. Thanks for the reminder. I would add a word of caution about tomato paste. I found a couple recently in my pantry that had all kinds of unexpected "stuff" in them. I threw them out. Watch the labels. It seems like it should be a simple ingredient list, but they can apparently get lengthy (and gross).

  5. If I use fresh tomatoes instead of the canned tomato paste how much tomatoes does that equate to? As in 2 or 3 lbs perhaps?

  6. I can't wait to try this. I have been on Advocare for 1 week and have lost 7 pounds. One thing that I have missed is catsup. I made sweet potato "fries" with my Nuwave oven. I used a tablespoon of whole grain mustard for a dip and it was delicious, but I missed catsup. I will make this tomorrow.

    For dieting, I sure recommend the Nuwave oven. I got mine from my neighbor and I love it. I use half a sweet potato, cut it into wedges, toss it with olive oil, add salt and pepper, then cook it for about 20 minutes in the Nuwave. They are sooooo good and on my diet.

  7. This nutrition information is also perplexing. By my calculation (using CalorieCount.com) 1 serving of 8.5 would yield 40 kcals. What is your method of calculating nutrition facts?

  8. Balsamic vinegar has a VERY different flavor and color than white wine vinegar. I'm looking forward to trying this recipe…the first time I try a 'new' recipe, I follow the ingredient list exactly as written.

  9. I was wondering why you didn’t cook this for a few minutes before putting it in the refrigerator. Especially with raw tomato paste. I would cook it for 10 or so minutes to make sure that everything is combined. But i can’t wait to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing.
