Lose Weight with Coconut Oil

Coconut oil not only adds a tropical flavor to your food, it also helps you lose weight!

We’ve all heard about how coconuts or coconut oil is high in saturated fat. Up until the last few years, doctors shied away from this high-fat food. Now experts have shown the fats in coconut oil are actually good for you, possibly even better than olive oil! And best of all, it promotes weight loss!

The particular kind of fat found in coconuts is a fat called Medium Chain Triglycerids or MCT’s. These fats are metabolized in the body different than Long Chain Triglycerides (LCT’s). MCT’s are rarely stored as body fat and the body uses them as fuel for energy! They act almost like a carbohydrate without raising your blood sugar levels!

Saturated fats can be classified by their structure into short-chain, medium-chain and long-chain fats. Research has shown that consuming MCT fats increase fat burning! MCT oil is derived from coconuts and in a recent study led to more significant weight loss than did olive oil.

You can use MCT oils in cooking and along with the normal foods you eat everyday. According to experts, you should consume 18-24 grams of oil a day to see significant results. In a study reviewed in the “Journal of American College of Nutrition,” the experts added coconut oil to muffins, salads, and in high heat cooking.

At Skinny Ms. we use unrefined coconut oil in many of our desserts. Check out some of our recipes containing healthy coconut oil:  Zucchini Bread, Buttermilk Biscuits, Blueberry Lemon Scones, Bananas Foster.

So, in a nutshell, or shall we say “coconut” shell, try substituting coconut oil where you would normally use olive oil and see how it works toward your weight loss goals!

We’ve put together several unrefined coconut oils that are great for cooking and baking. Remember, not all coconut oils are created equal. Always, look for unrefined and non-hydrogenated oil. Coconut oil is typically solid when purchased but easily liquifies in warm weather.

  1. I love it on popcorn–no need to add butter or anything else (well, maybe a dash of season salt!)!! And, I love it on my whole wheat toast–just to change it up a bit from my sugar free jam!

    1. Hlghkicks74, Oh my…sounds heavenly. I'm working on my next recipe ebook and coconut oil is in many of the recipes. 🙂

  2. I have been using coconut oil for about 10 years now. I love to cook with it and prefer the taste over butter. I use coconut oil on my skin everyday and I love it. Most definitely my favorite ingredient in my kitchen and my bathroom.

  3. I stir in about a tsp into my hot oatmeal every morning instead of butter.  Sooo yummy.  I also add blueberries and cinnamon.

  4. I live in Texas and it is VERY hot here in the summer. I was keeping my jar of coconut oil in the cabinet during the cooler months and it was fine, but as soon as summer got here it completely melted into liquid form. So, I put it in the fridge and now it is rock solid. Any suggestions on where to store it? Or is using it in liquid form just as good?

    1. Megan, I leave my in the pantry for the very reason you mention…gets too hard in the fridge. It does get very soft or completely melts in the warmer months. The only time I need it in solid form is when I'm making biscuits. It's fine in liquid form for other uses.

  5. Use it when I pop my popcorn, whenever I previously used butter, and as a face cleanser with sea salt.

  6. Megan, the liquid form is the same as the solid in terms of health- although it can be a bit messier.  This sounds crazy but sometimes in the summer I put mine on the floor next to a vent and it will be cool enough down there to bring it back to a solid.

  7. I use coconut oil when baking and I've also made body scrubs with it! Just coconut oil and brown sugar makes an awesome scrub and my skin is amazing afterwards!

  8. Yeah !! I use coconut oil in every kind of food. It makes the food yummy and really very helpful in losing weight. It makes a person fit and healthy.

  9. Not only is coconut oil great for you to ingest (powerful anti fungal properties to keep tummy bugs away, increased energy, stablizing blood sugar etc.), it is also fantastic for wound healing. My dog recently had a wound which I was using a topical treatment from my vet, it was healing that great, so I switched to coconut oil, the results were amazing and it healed so much quicker. I subsequently read an article about how coconut oil accelerates re-epithelialization and stimulates higher collagen cross-linking within the tissue being repaired. I have a pineapple smoothie in the morning made with Coconut milk & a tablespoon of coconut oil. It's one of my favorite items! 🙂

  10. I add canned coconut milk to my Lentils along with Turmeric and Curry and they just taste yummy and creamy.

  11. My husband has psoriatic arthritis. He was taking Humira but due to an infection he had to quite taking it. His arms broke out horribly. He wanted to go back to his steroid cream and I suggested that he use coconut oil. He agreed to try it……not really expecting it to help. Less then a week later his arms are much improved, he's not wearing long sleeve shirts and he's a believer! Coconut oil is becoming a staple in our house!!

    1. Miles, I prefer to cook with coconut oil but a lot of people add it to their morning smoothie. Try cooking scrambled eggs with it…YUM!

    1. Sarah, You can't remove the taste. However, if you combine the coconut oil with other ingredients, you typically can no longer taste the coconut.

  12. I use coconut oil for all cooking/baking, replacing oil, shortening & butter. Also as a moisturizer (whipped up with a few drops of lavender essential oil) and as a carrier oil in my home-made soap, and oil-pulling for oral health (melt it, mix in some peppermint or cinnamon flavor & allow to cool in ice-cube tray for quick, single use portions). Occasionally I'll add a bit to my morning coffee with a bit of stevia for a treat.
