Homemade Hoisin Sauce

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons lite soy sauce optional tamari
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice powder
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter natural, creamy
  • 2 tablespoons honey raw preferred
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 garlic cloves minced

Instructions

  • Mix vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, and Chinese 5-spice powder with 3 tablespoons water and set aside.
  • In a separate small bowl, stir together honey and peanut butter.
  • Pour sesame oil into a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
  • Once hot, add garlic.
  • Cook for about one minute, just until golden and fragrant.
  • Add vinegar-soy mixture and whisk.
  • Whisk in peanut butter-honey mixture and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until the sauce is fully combined and slightly thick. Remove from heat.
  • Cool uncovered, then refrigerate or serve right away.
  • Sauce will be good in the fridge for up to a week.
