Avoiding Temptation: 3 Ways a Change of Words Can Help You Lose Weight

A simple change of words can make a big impact in your decisions, and by consequence, how successful you are in meeting your weight loss goals. When you speak to yourself positively and avoid dangerous statements, you set yourself up to succeed. Here are some tips to help you avoid temptation and 3 Ways a Change in Words Can Help You Lose Weight:

1. Change “I Can’t” to “I Don’t”

Think about the difference between saying “I can’t eat that” and saying “I don’t eat that”. Notice anything? Which option sounds more convincing? When you say I DON’T, you take ownership over your dietary choices and reaffirm to yourself that you are capable and determined to meet your goals.

2. Stick to the Plan

When you’re trying to lose weight, temptations lurk behind every corner. Sure, high fat/high calorie foods can pack on the pounds, but that doesn’t mean you have to say farewell to all of your favorite treats. Moderation is key. Make a healthy eating plan that allows for a little indulgence now and then and you will be much more likely to stay on track. Perhaps, you’ll allow yourself to enjoy a few slices of pizza on Friday nights, but you’ll eat healthy during the week. You should also have a plan for when surprise treats pop up. Will you allow yourself to indulge once or twice a week in those donuts that always find their way to the counter at work? If you’ve already allowed yourself your allotted number of goodies during a given week, stick to the plan and avoid rationalizing by saying, “Maybe just a little bit…” A little bit will turn into a lot before you know it.

3. Stay Positive

Nobody’s perfect, and chances are, you’ll fall off the weight loss wagon every now and then. When you do, avoid negative self-talk, like, “I’ll never be able to lose the weight I want to.” By telling yourself that you can’t, you are setting yourself up to fail. Instead, remind yourself of why you want to lose weight– to be healthier, to have more energy, to look good in a bathing suit– and tell yourself that you can do it. Just as negative self-talk can lead to negative results, positive self-talk can positively influence your ability to get the body you want.
