Four Ways to Score a Discounted Gym Membership

You can afford the gym with these tips!

Do you have a small budget with big dreams of being physically fit?

Your determination for a healthy lifestyle should not be hindered because you cannot afford (or so you think) a gym membership. With these suggested tips, you will be well on your way to finding the right gym membership on a budget. Here’s how:

1. Seek out special deals or promotions. Most gyms offer at least three days complimentary, although some will even give a free week or month-long membership pass. These offers are simple to find online by searching the gym name and “free pass”. Most health clubs have promotions when summer is around the corner and membership demand peaks during those months. Simply go to a gym of your choice and ask the manager directly for discounts or promotions.

2. Ask for a discounted rate. Enrollment fees are expensive and can cost up to $100 or more. Always request the gym waive their membership enrollment fee. If they are not willing to honor your request at that time ask to be notified once they begin waiving enrollment fees. Use tactics such as offering to bring in new customers. Remember, if you don’t ask the answer will always be no. Keep in mind, if you don’t ask for specials, they likely won’t be presented.

3. Use your contacts.  Be resourceful and tap into your contacts. Whether you know it or not you may actually already have a contact at a gym or simply know somebody that has a direct personal contact who may be helpful. Knowing someone when you walk through the gym door is advantageous. Start by asking your most active friends, family or business associates who are already in great shape.

4. Location, location, location. Find fitness clubs or aerobic studios in the nearest college town. Some have donation-based programs or promotions with manageable commitments resulting in free or reduced-price memberships. For instance, some Bikram yoga studios will allow you to take classes for free if you help teach too.

If these options are not feasible other inexpensive ways to get fit such as purchasing exercise videos and used equipment, speed walking, running on public tracks or in the neighborhood as well as swimming at public pools, are all budget-friendly options.

  1. Here's the biggest one:  Bring cash and be willing to walk out.   Gyms know that most people won't show up after six months, but if you're dedicated, you can score a discounted membership by paying in full.  Make sure they don't charge "maintenance fees" or other such quarterly charges.
