Ingredients you may be unfamiliar with:

Amaranth – A grain higher in calcium, iron, and the amino acid lysine than other common cereal grains [1].
Barley Malt Extract – Barley malt is a sweetener derived from sprouted barley. This ingredient is often utilized as a refined sugar substitute.
Coconut Oil (melted) – This ingredient is gaining popularity because it offers a saturated fat called lauric acid, which increases good (HDL) cholesterol. It may also help the liver break down fat for better energy burn [2].
Dried Cane Syrup – This is another term for evaporated cane juice, an unrefined sweetener made from the sugarcane plant. It isn’t processed, so it keeps nutrients often destroyed in the refining process.
Evaporated Cane Juice – This natural, unrefined sweetener is made from the liquid of the sugarcane plant. Because it’s unprocessed, it retains nutrients typically destroyed during processing.
Monk Fruit Extract – A vine-based fruit, originally found in China, is used to create this zero-calorie sweetener. It’s also available commercially under the brand name Nectresse. Organic Evaporated Cane Juice – This is unrefined, just like conventional evaporated cane juice; however, this version is made from organically-grown sugarcane, so you avoid ingesting pesticides and fertilizers made with chemicals.
Organic Sprouted Spelt ­- This is a type of grain related to wheat.
Raw Honey – There’s no industry-standard definition of “raw” honey, but generally it means the sweetener hasn’t been filtered or heated to remove fine particles and pollen grains. Processing may also remove some of the nutrients found in raw honey.
Triticale – A wheat-rye hybrid that’s higher in fiber and protein than either of its parent grains.
Untoasted Wheat Germ – Untoasted wheat germ is believed to contain more nutrients because it hasn’t been processed by heat.
Whole Grain Crisp Rice (Whole Grain Rice, Barley Malt) – Barley malt is a sweetener made from sprouted barley and is typically used as a substitute for refined sugar.   1. Sugar is sugar.
    Evaporated Cane Juice, Dried Cane Syrup, and Honey, all are just another name for SUGAR!!
    Most of the cereals listed here list one of the above in their ingredients.
    This list is bogus.

    1. Those are all considered clean sugars that are acceptable in moderation. Nothing bogus about it. You can limit your added sugar intake or cut it out completely. It’s up to the individual. If a woman stops drinking soda which can have up to 70 grams of sugar, (the recommended daily limit is 25 grams for women) in ONE bottle, I don’t see why she can’t have a healthy cereal with a touch of sweetness. Just read labels and watch your intake and serving sizes.

  2. Agrred. The list is not titled “sugar alternative cereals”, it’s called “clean cereals”, and these all contain cleaner, less processed forms of sugar. The list is not bogus.

  3. Let’s try not to hate on things. Simply voice your opinion if you feel what you have to share to be beneficial but do so with kindness. That’s how all of us would choose to be spoken to and most certainly how we train our children to talk to others. We are the change we want to see in the world.

      1. Hi! Just started clean eating! Love this handy list! I have been eating Quaker Oats honey squares said 100% whole grains, but realized afterwards plain old sugar in ingredients list guess this wasn’t a good choice for clean eating?! How about Cheerios original!?

        1. Carol, Original Cheerios do have a small amount of added sugar but otherwise, they fine as an occasional snack.

  5. I came looking for a RYE CEREAL . Too many are wheat based or oats, or bran, and most of the cereals “plug me up” especially wheat and bran. My main bread has been rye so I figure the gut flora is rye base. Is it being used in a cereal as the main ingredient?

  6. what’s your feeling on steel ground oatmeal from health food store? I like the convenience of cooking it, freezing individual portions and microwave for breakfast, with nuts
