Learn to Cook Eggs: 6 Methods Every Chef Must Know

Learn to cook eggs in every way imaginable!

Tired of your usual morning scramble? Dreaming of dishes like Eggs Benedict and gorgeous omelettes, but not sure where to begin? Whether you’re a seasoned home chef or one in training, it’s important to learn how to properly make eggs in a variety of styles. 

While many this method intimidating, it’s much easier than you may think. To poach an egg, simply break the egg into a saucepan of simmering water and cook for one minute. Use a spatula to loosen the egg from the bottom of the pan, turn off the heat, cover, and allow your egg to sit for about four minutes or until the egg whites are cooked. Use a slotted spoon to lift the egg out of the pan.

Hard-boiled eggs make the perfect healthy go-to snack. Place eggs, with their shells on, inside a large pot of water, allowing the water to just cover them completely. Bring the water to a boil and cover the pot. Remove the pot from the heat and allow your eggs to sit covered for about 10 minutes. Cooking soft-boiled eggs is very similar to cooking hard-boiled eggs. Follow the instructions for hard-boiled eggs, but allow them to sit for only about five to seven minutes. Remove the eggs from the pot of water and place them into a bowl of cold water. To eat your soft-boiled eggs, use a knife to remove the cap off the egg. You can eat this delicious treat straight from the shell.

Over Easy
Heat a small amount of oil in a non-stick pan before carefully cracking the egg into the frying pan. As the edges of the whites solidify flip your egg to the opposite side. Be careful not to break the yolk. Once both sides are cooked, leaving the inside still deliciously runny, your eggs are finished.

Fried eggs, or sunny side-up eggs, are cooked similarly to over easy eggs. Add a bit of oil to a frying pan and carefully crack your eggs into the pan. Allow your eggs to cook until their whites are set but the yolks are still runny, typically about three minutes. Unlike over easy eggs, you do not flip fried eggs. Just cook one side until done, and enjoy.

A classic favorite, sure to please your family, is the omelette. Crack your eggs into a mixing bowl, and whisk until the yolks and whites are combined and smooth. Next, pour the eggs into a heavy-bottomed nonstick pan over medium heat and season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the eggs to cook until the bottom begins to set and then carefully flip.
