    Iced chai
  • 2 tablespoons chai syrup (*recipe below) per 1 cup milk, more or less as desired
  • 1 cup milk of choice per cup (unsweetened coconut from the carton, almond, soy, or dairy)
  • 3 to 4 ice cubes per glass
    Chai syrup
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 4 black teabags
  • 2 teaspoons real vanilla extract
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2-inch piece ginger, cleaned and thinly sliced, or 2 teaspoons ginger powder
  • 4 cloves or 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon ground cardamom
  • 1 star anise
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  1. Place all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Stir well. Reduce heat to medium-low. Let simmer for 30 minutes, covered.
  2. Strain through a fine mesh sieve or a colander with small holes* over a bowl. Once cooled, pour into an open mason jar.
  3. *Sieve or colander can be lined with a thin layer of cheesecloth to avoid any tea dregs getting through.

Do you cook the milk as well? Or only the syrup ingredients?

    • Gale Compton  February 29, 2016

Alexis, Yes add the milk with the other ingredients. 🙂

  3. Pam  May 27, 2017

How long does the syrup stay good?

    • Nichole Furlong  May 27, 2017

Great questions, Pam! The syrup will last 1 week, refrigerated. However, you can freeze the syrup for a couple months! If you freeze the syrup in an ice cube tray (2 tablespoons per ice cube), it will be easy to thaw and use. Plus, already portioned to save time!
