Shiny hair is the ultimate head-turner. No one can resist a gorgeous, glossy mane that sparkles like a diamond in the sunlight. Unfortunately, hair suffers consequences from repeated washing, styling with heated tools, sun exposure, and climate damage. Before you know it, those precious locks go from glowing to dull and faded. You can take control of your hair’s luster. Super-smooth strands mean softer hair cuticles, and softer hair cuticles reflect more light and give off that megashine effect.
We’ve gathered a list of shine-inducing treatments that are natural, gentle, and oh-so effective. They’ll reverse damage and strengthen your hair while smoothing cuticles and cranking up the gloss factor. Note, however, that some treatments don’t smell as great as your regular hair products. To neutralize the scent, use a light conditioning or serum spray (not cream) after each treatment.
1. Coconut Oil
Dryness causes hair to lose its luster and become dull and shine-deprived. Coconut oil makes an incredible, natural moisturizer that’ll rejuvenate your locks and crank up the shine. For best results, use unrefined coconut oil to lock in moisture and provide optimal nourishment. To apply, simply warm the oil in your hands and start at the ends, gradually working your way to the tips.
2. Egg Treatment
Egg yolks are rich in fats and protein, meaning they contain naturally moisturizing properties. Egg whites remove unwanted oil and greasy buildup thanks to bacteria-eating enzymes. Treat your hair to these benefits by mixing two egg yolks and 1-2 tbsp of olive oil. After shampooing, lather the egg treatment in your hair, let it sit for 5-6 minutes, and rinse. The hydrating treatment yields striking results!
3. Yogurt Treatment
Dairy products like plain yogurt can reverse damage caused by air pollution and styling products. Use plain or greek yogurt and massage into dry hair. Avoid flavored yogurts or ones that contain sugar because they can be less effective and alter your hair color if it’s dyed. Tie hair up in a ponytail and let the treatment sit for 20-30 minutes, then rinse with shampoo and conditioner.
4. Aloe Vera and Honey
Mix equal parts aloe vera, honey, and your conditioner in a bowl. Amounts will vary depending on hair length. Massage mixture into hair and let sit in a shower cap for 5-10 minutes. Next, shampoo and condition. Note: Be aware that honey can naturally lighten hair. It’s best to use pure aloe gel. Check ingredients to ensure there is no alcohol because it will dry your hair.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar
Squeezing ACV into your beauty regimen can do wonders for your hair! By removing oily buildup and clumpy residue, this magical elixir revitalizes hair and leaves it silky-smooth. Mix 2 cups apple cider vinegar and 1 cup water. After shampooing, lather the vinegar wash in your hair and let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Make sure to thoroughly wash the rinse out to avoid radiating a pungent vinegar odor. Follow up with a leave-in conditioner spray for extra conditioning!
6. Beer Wash
Beer is prepared from hops and malt, materials that can revitalize and strengthen hair thanks to their protein and amazing nutrients. The maltose in beer smooths cuticles and wards off dandruff. After shampooing, massage a flat beer through your hair strands. For optimal results, treat your hair to a beer wash every 2 weeks.
7. Mayonnaise Treatment
Don’t break your bank with salon treatments or expensive hair care products. A simple jar of mayonnaise is all you need for glorious tresses that shine with life! Mayonnaise increases hair density and strengthens the hair shaft while nourishing your locks from deep within. When working with this treatment, reach for full fat mayonnaise. Massage 1/2 to 1 cup through your hair. Let the treatment sit for 30 minutes, then rinse with cold water and shampoo.
This buttery vegetable contains essential antioxidants and incredible nutrients to enhance your hair’s appearance and restore its health. As a bonus, avocados contain vitamins that promote hair growth! Mash a medium-sized avocado in a bowl along with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Massage the mixture into damp hair and let it sit for 30 minutes. Wash your hair like you normally would.
9. Banana and Almond Oil
Bananas soothe tresses while helping hair maintain a healthy pH balance. Almond oil softens hair and reverses damage from heating tools and sun exposure. Like #8, this treatment calls for an avocado, ensuring incredible shine. Mash half an avocado with one medium ripe banana and a 1/2 tablespoon of almond oil. Massage the mask into each section of your hair, from roots to ends, and let sit for 30 minutes. Rinse the mixture with shampoo and conditioner.
10. Proper Diet and Care
These treatments help repair your existing hair, but what about that soon-to-be born hair? The strength and quality of your sprouting strands depends on what you put in your body. Maintaining a nutritious diet rich in healthy fats and proteins will guarantee a beautiful mane and hydrated locks.
