Embrace your natural curls.
Have you tried every cream and mousse on your naturally curly hair without getting great results? Don’t give up! Embrace your natural curls and employ these 10 hair care tips for curly hair. Take care of your tresses from start to finish for a smooth, easy hair care routine that results in beautiful curls.
1. Leave-In Conditioner
If you use gel to sculpt and secure curls, mix a dollop of leave-in conditioner into your styling gel. Continue styling as normal with this mixture to give locks an all-day frizz barrier and create a smoother scrunch. Leave-in conditioners are especially helpful when it comes to caring for your natural tresses. And if we’re talking leave-in’s, you can’t go wrong with Biosilk Silk Therapy! This product not only wards off pesky tangles, it also helps prevent damage from sun exposure or dry air brought by harsher climates.
2. Overboard Options
We recommend using no more than two products in your hair, in order to prevent weighing it down. At the same time, don’t go straight for your scalp when you apply product; this will only trigger greasy build-up! Instead, smooth in product towards your ends and work your way up. When you end up going overboard with styling products, rinse away that sticky mess with an anti-residue shampoo! We like – Neutrogena Shampoo, Anti-Residue Formula. Effective and affordable!
3. Satin and Silk
Rise and shine to beautiful, silky curls you don’t have to re-style in the morning! Waking up without worrying about fussing over hair is beyond refreshing, and will also give you a few extra ZZZs. Give your hair the ultimate beauty sleep with with Living Proof’s Night Cap Overnight Protector! This easy-to-use product will strengthen curls while you sleep and have you waking up to shiny, vibrant, and manageable hair. Simply wear a plastic cap over the conditioner and rinse out in the shower. Bad hair days will be a thing of the past.
4. DIY Your ‘Do
We can’t control the weather, unfortunately. On days so muggy you can feel the moistness between your fingers, you might find your hair standing on its end. Instead of cursing Mother Nature for your untamed tresses, take control with some anti-frizz precautions! Here at Skinny Ms., we recommend saving yourself from frizzy, dry, untamed hair by moisturizing properly with this incredible DIY frizzy hair mask.
5. Keep It Cool
Straightening, blow-drying, and curling hair can transform a bed head into a stunning, picture-perfect mane. Unfortunately, they share one thing in common: damage. Heat harms your hair, promotes split ends, and breaks down hair proteins. Luckily, countless products out there can help defend against heat antagonists. So on days where you don’t have time to let your locks dry naturally, make sure to apply a protectant before styling. We love the Opulent Heat Protectant Spray, infused with argan oil, jojoba oil, and collagen.
6. Curly Comb
Wide-tooth combs prevent breakage and preserve your curls’ shape, keeping hair happy and healthy. Their teeth are spaced wider apart than what you’d find on an ordinary comb, making them suitable for all hair types, especially curls! At the same time, wide-tooth combs combs help separate and detangle your strands in ways brushes can’t. We recommend the Cricket Ultra Smooth Rake Comb infused with Argan Oil.
7. Rough Up the Roots
Always start at the ends of your hair, combing out a little at all time. Slowly make your way up toward the root. This method untangles knots with ease and shields hair from unnecessary breakage.
8. Conditioning Comb
Combing while conditioning is a great way to detangle serious snags, while leaving you with silky smooth strands. When conditioning, start at the ends of your hair, combing out a little at a time and slowly making your way up towards the root. This method untangles knots with ease and prevents breakage. We love L’Oreal Paris’s Curls Conditioner, guaranteed to nourish and redefine curls after just one wash! Just make sure to rinse well afterwards to prevent residue from accumulating!
9. Sulfate-Free Hair Products
Curly hair is often dry and needs a moisturizing boost. Sulfates in hair products can be very drying and harsh to all types of hair, especially curly hair. Sulfates tend to damage hair coils, making them brittle and frizzy. If you have naturally curly hair, look for products that are designed specially for your hair type. Give a little TLC to your curls, embrace them, and flaunt those sexy curls. We like Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo with Restorative Formula which is Gentle & Sulfate Free.
10. Haircut Help
Curly hair completely transforms as it dries, including its texture, length, and color. This makes it tough for stylists to picture the end result when cutting wet hair. Having your hairstylist cut your hair while it’s dry will help them see where each curl falls. This will take the guesswork out of where to cut and eliminates uh-oh haircut moments.

When I do my hair curly or wavy, the key to success is never to brush your hair. Use your fingers and hands to eliminate knots, scrunch, twist, etc.
These are not all great tips. Recommending shampoo in general is a bad idea because shampoo strips your scalp of the natural oils it produces, which causes overproduction to compensate. Co-washing with acv rinses are more effective. You also skip over not using a towel on curly hair – it creates frizz. Use a t-shirt or microfiber wrap instead.
Can anyone tell me how to help my curly hair grow back at the crown. My hair has gotten very thin there maybe because I wear it up too much. I’m not sure. Any natural options that fore sure work?
April, You may be onto something regarding wearing your hair up. I would recommend giving your hair a break and see if there are any improvements in the crown area over the next few months.
