This 5-Ingredient Apple Cider Braised Chicken is a perfect example of a dinner that's ready to eat in about 30 minutes!
Before the Instant Pot came around, I had a hard time getting weeknight dinners on the table. More often than not, when I didn’t have time to cook, I turned to healthy-sounding takeout options (which aren’t really as healthy or filling as you think). No wonder I had an impossible time getting a flatter belly! Now that I have this amazing appliance, it’s so much easier to cook healthy dinners that are both filling and satisfying. This 5-Ingredient Apple Cider Braised Chicken is a perfect example of a dinner that’s ready to eat in about 30 minutes!
Without the Instant Pot, you could still cook up chicken in that amount of time–no doubt about it. But, the resulting chicken wouldn’t be as tender and juicy as the one you make in the Instant Pot! The apple cider has the perfect amount of sweetness and acidity, which infuses the lean chicken breasts with moist flavor as it cooks. Add in a few tablespoons of spicy whole grain mustard and some aromatic onion, and you have one of the best chicken dishes I’ve cooked this year!
How to Serve 5-Ingredient Apple Cider Braised Chicken
My favorite part about this recipe is how versatile it is. The chicken breasts are more tender and shreddable than slow cooker chicken, and you can serve them any way you like. You can carefully scoop out the chicken breasts and plate them whole over quinoa, brown rice, or zucchini noodles. Don’t forget to ladle some of the broth on top–it’s almost as flavorful as the chicken itself!
Since the chicken becomes so tender over the 20-minute cook time, it’s also easy to turn it into shredded chicken. That means you can serve it in tacos, power bowls, or any other recipe that calls for cooked, chopped chicken. The flavor of the apple cider and mustard pair well with a number of different flavor profiles, so you can use this shredded chicken for anything from Italian recipes to Mexican and Mediterranean.
Finally, the recipe makes about four servings–one chicken breast per person. If you’re cooking for one, that means you’ll have plenty of leftovers to reheat later in the week. For those of you who are feeding a family, you can get a second batch started when you sit down for dinner and tomorrow’s lunch will be ready to refrigerate when you’re done eating.

Can you do this with boneless chicken thighs? if so what are the changes. Thank you
Hi Diane, you can use chicken thighs. Keep in mind all the nutritional information, including smartpoints, will change.
Trying to figure out if you mean mustard seeds, not mustard. In the pics, I see lots (way more than 2 tablespoons) of mustard seeds. The recipe calls for 2T ‘whole grain mustard’. The pics show way more than 2T mustard ‘seeds’, not mustard.
Hi Carol, whole grain mustard contains mustard seeds. 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard is correct.
Hello, l don’t own a instant pot, how could l bake this recipe in the oven? Thank you
Hi, to make this in an oven, pre heat the oven to 400 degrees. Follow the instructions as listed, instead of the Instant Pot use a 13 x 9 inch casserole dish. Cover and cook for about 20 minutes.
