The best way to make chicken wings at home!
Chicken wings have been “in” for quite some time now. It’s no surprise, really. Whether you’re making them to enjoy during a sporting event, as a quick snack on the weekend, or, just because, you can’t beat wings for flavor and appeal. Our recipe for crispy air fryer chicken wings will show you how to make a good thing tastier, easier, and even healthier!
Swapping the Deep Fryer for the Air Fryer
You might be thinking… “Healthier? With all that fat? How?” Well, the air fryer, of course! The traditional way to make wings includes deep frying them, and even if you have a real deep fryer (which helps with oil temperature and keeping the oil in the fryer and off your counter) it’s still “deep frying,” requiring a bunch of oil.
Air fryers, too, are in vogue. But air frying is not oil-free, as the name implies. That said, this method requires so little oil that it’s close enough. Keep reading and you’ll see how this revolutionary appliance is going to make super-easy and tasty wings!
Not Oil-Free, But Close
As stated above, air fryers are not a completely oil-free cooking method, but it might as well be. When you consider that a typical deep-fry process uses CUPS of oil, which has to then be strained, and re-captured if you are going to use it again, or just dumped if you’ve used it past its useful lifecycle, we are going to make our chicken wings using — wait for it — only one tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. Crazy right? I mean, how can you get crispy wings with only the natural fat on the chicken and one measly tablespoon of extra oil. Magic? Not quite…
Dry Rub for Flavor!
We have a whole host of spices and herbs we are going to use with our chicken to impart awesome flavor. I mean, when you are combining garlic powder, onion powder, Italian herb seasoning, smoked paprika and more, it’s bound to be delicious! The little oil we are going to use is really only there to help those dry herbs stick to the chicken.
Coat the chicken with the olive oil, then add the herb mix, tossing it with the chicken to make sure they are well-dusted with all that yummy flavor mix. Seriously, you’ve done the hard part!
Now, the Air Fryer Does the Rest
You’ll want to make sure you have preheated your air fryer to 400 degrees. You can do this before you season your chicken, because it really needs only a minimum of 5 minutes or so to preheat (you might want to check your model’s manual to determine pre-heating times). Place your wings in the air fryer in a single layer and cook for 20 minutes, turning them over half way through the cooking time.
That’s it. Crispy, hot, tasty wings, with only a fraction of the calories and fat and…you aren’t wiping oil off your counter. To me, that’s a reason alone to give these babies a shot.
