PB&J, the clean eating way!
Just thinking about the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches your parents used to make for you as a child probably has you hankering for a bite of crunchy nut butter sweetened with ooey gooey fruit jam. Putting these two ingredients together inside a sandwich is the definition of comfort food. But traditionally, the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches of our youth were likely loaded with peanut butter packed with preservatives and jelly made with added refined sugar. Make a clean eating PB&J with our Clean Eating almond butter and jelly Sandwich.
Almond Butter and Jelly Sandwich
The key to making a clean eating almond butter and jelly sandwich with nut butter and jam is to choose your ingredients wisely. Look for a peanut butter, almond butter, or hazelnut butter made with all natural ingredients, free of added sugars and preservatives. When choosing a jam, look for an organic label with no added sugar. So many jellies and jams are packed with added sweeteners, but we like a fruit jam that derives its sweetness from the fruit itself. And choose a whole grain bread. The first ingredient in your loaf should be whole grains, and if you see ingredients such as oats, flax, barley, hemp seeds, and dates, then you know you’ve got a healthy slice of bread. Whole grain bread is full of fiber and nutrients, and is a complex carbohydrate that’s 100% guilt-free.
And if you’re up for a truly fresh, clean eating experience, make your own jam! Our recipe is a reader favorite. Tell us what you think!

Polaner is hard to find near where I live, but I still look for fruit spreads that are majority natural ingredients. Shelf-stable natural creamy peanut butter – one with the peanuts and peanut oil pre-mixed – is my preference for a good nut butter. Brownberry Whole Grains 100% Whole Wheat Bread is my go-to bread and is an excellent base for both of the above spreads. Put a layer of raw and unfiltered wildflower honey between two layers of natural creamy peanut butter, add a sliced banana on top of the peanut butter on one slice of bread, put the jelly on the other slice of bread, place the jelly-covered bread on top of the peanut butter, honey and banana-covered bread, gently press the two slices together, serve the rest of the banana as a side item, pour a glass of milk, and one delicious, nutritious and filling meal awaits you. I’m about to enjoy one right now. *takes a bite* Mmm, great sandwich!
Pete, Great ideas. 🙂
Feel free to try it if you want to. Not only is this combination delicious, but also nutritious when made with healthy ingredients and it’s also a filling meal. You won’t have to worry about being hungry again for hours after eating one.
Here, I’ll give you the recipe:
Ingredients
2 slices of bread of your choice
2 tablespoons (minimum) of peanut butter, your choice of type, i.e. creamy, crunchy, extra crunchy, etc.
1 tablespoon (minimum) of jelly, jam or preserves, your choice of flavor
1-2 spoonfuls of honey, your choice of variety
1 (preferably) ripe banana
Note: I say minimum amount for the peanut butter and jelly since the amount added may vary depending on the size of the bread slices being used to make your sandwich.
Directions
1. Lay out two slices of bread on a flat surface, like a cutting board or a large plate. Unstack the bread as though opening up a book so that they appear as mirror images. This way, the bread will line up better once you put the sandwich together and you can avoid the dreaded “jelly slide” or even the FAR worse “peanut butter grab”, where the peanut butter grabs hold of a napkin or paper towel. It’s still a good idea to keep a napkin handy for cleaning the knife and a paper towel to place your banana on and clean up your work area afterwards.
2. Using a butter knife, spread a layer of peanut butter on one slice of bread. Excess peanut butter can be wiped off on the blank slice of bread.
3. Drizzle 1-2 spoonfuls of honey over the peanut butter. Blend the two ingredients together on the bread using the back of the spoon used for the drizzling. Again, any excess honey can be wiped off on the other slice of bread.
4. Spread a second layer of peanut butter over the layer of honey. This helps keep the honey from leaking and from interacting with the jelly, which can turn both into something with the lubricating properties of motor oil. Once again, excess peanut butter can be wiped off on the other slice of bread. Clean what’s left on the knife with a napkin so that you don’t risk getting any peanut butter in the jelly jar.
5. Peel a banana and cut it into coin-like slices.
6. Lay out the banana slices over the top layer of peanut butter.
7. Spread a layer of jelly on the other slice of bread.
8. Place the jelly-covered bread – jelly-side down – on top of the peanut butter, honey and banana-covered bread.
9. Gently press the two slices together to form sandwich. Transfer finished product onto a plate of construction took place on a cutting board.
10. Serve the remainder of the banana as a side item, pour a glass of milk, and you’re ready to enjoy your healthy and yummy peanut butter, honey, banana and jelly sandwich. Mmm, so good.
Thank you Pete, this great! 🙂
